G&F: Three Point restriction in effect on Lander Region General Deer Seasons.

(Lander, Wyo.) — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is reminding Lander region deer hunters that there have been changes to most general seasons this year. The Lander region includes Lander, Riverton, Dubois, and Rawlins. Hunters in most general license areas are only allowed to harvest antlered mule deer with 3 points or more on either antler, or any white-tailed deer.

The primary reason for this change is in response to public concerns about low mule deer numbers and poor hunting quality at last year’s season setting meetings. Limiting harvest, by imposing antler restrictions, should reduce hunting pressure and increase buck ratios in following years. With drought conditions this year, the department anticipates increased mule deer mortality that may further reduce these populations following what appears to have been two years of above average winter mortality in 2010 and 2011. Antler restrictions in place this year will likely result in fewer hunters and less harvest on these deer. To further reduce harvest, the department has nearly eliminated doe/fawn licenses in these hunt areas as well.

Hunters should always refer to the regulations for area by area details as there are some local general seasons without antler point restrictions this year. If you have any questions please contact Lander Region Information Specialist Rene Schell at 307-332-2688.
