2012 Northern Arapaho general election results are in; two business council incumbents out

(Wind River Indian Reservation, Wyo.) – Members of the Northern Arapaho Tribe hit the polls yesterday and voted out two current members of the business council.

Jim Shakespeare and Julian Hubbard both lost re-election. Voters could pick six candidates out of the 12 on the ballot.

Incumbent Darrell O’Neal Sr. was re-elected, earning more votes for the business council than other candidates. He had 495 votes. The second highest vote-getter was Willard Gould with 493. The other elected to the business council were Anthony Al Addison Sr., Ronald K. Oldman, Thurlo J. Jenkins Sr. and David “Ron” McElroy Sr.

Shakespeare had the ninth highest number of votes, with 368. Hubbard was last with 306.

Ricky Blackburn Sr., Nathan C. Friday Sr., Bill Armour, Lyle Valdez, Sami S. Dresser and Keenan Goesbeck were elected to the Tribal Committee.

Elected to the Economic Development Committee are: Howard G. Brown, Lance D. Oldman, Aaron Brannan Sr., John Goggles and Alice M. Moss.

Arapahoe had the largest turnout with 528 ballots cast. In Ethete, 441 people voted and in Fort Washakie 91 votes were cast. There were 41 absentee ballots.

Northern Arapaho Business Council Secretary Susan Johnston said the results are subject to a 7-day protest period.

At 9 a.m. on Jan. 7, the newly elected leaders will be sworn in at Blue Sky Hall in Ethete.
