(Lander, Wyo.) – Marian Sjostrom died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, in Lander. She was 84 years old.
A memorial service will be in the summer on the Diamond H Ranch.
Marian Nelson was born Nov. 25, 1928, in Kansas, the daughter of Albert and Minnie Nelson.
She attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., and majored in art.
She married Ralph Sjostrom on Aug. 15, 1948, and the couple lived on the Diamond H Ranch that they bought in 1963.
Mrs. Sjostrom worked as a substitute teacher at the Fort Washakie and Mill Creek schools and retired in 1984. She then worked in the “Foster Granparents Program” at South Elementary School in Lander until just a few years ago.
She was active in the Lander Art Guild and showed her paintings in art shows both locally and around the country. Her family said she loved to paint watercolors, and many people have some of her pieces. They said she loved to paint Indian paintbrush and aspens in the fall.
Mrs. Sjostrom was a founding member of Faith Lutheran Church and was active in the church her entire life.
She also actively participated in the Cowbelles, now the Cattlewomen, on the local and county levels, and created the artwork used on the organization’s napkins, placemats and more.
She and her husband enjoyed hosting the annual picnic at their ranch many times.
Her family said she loved baking cinnamon rolls, also canning and preparing food from her garden and fruit trees. She also loved the company of her cat, Tuffy, in her last few years. He was her constant companion.
She is survived by her children, Ronald Sjostrom of Georgia, Dana King of Bundaberg, Australia, Lyle Sjostrom of Aurora, Colo., and Ingrid Buchmeier of Lander; sister Lola Farmer of Houston; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ralph; and brother Marvin Nelson of McPherson, Kan.
