(Riverton, Wyo.) – A nine-year-old Riverton girl has moved on to the Elks Hoop Shoot Rocky Mountain Regional Contest in Denver this coming month after winning the Wyoming competition.
Demi Stauffenberg won the local Lodge contest at the Elks in Riverton, and the Riverton Hoops Shoot, then went to Districts in Casper where she smoked the competition from Lander, Casper and Gillette. That qualified Demi for the State Competition on Feb. 16th, also in Casper and she was crowned State Champion making 21 of 25 free throws.
“She’s had a basketball or a volleyball in her hand since she was born,” said Mom Tiffany, the head volleyball coach at Central Wyoming College. Demi’s Dad Serol is the head women’s basketball coach at CWC, so it comes as no surprise that Demi would have acquired some skills along the way.
“She also received a trophy for being the highest scorer for any girl in any age division with the 21 points! She will now compete at the Regional contest in Denver on March 9th,” Tiffany said. “We were really surprised because her previous best was 19 of 25 free throws, but she had another girl pressing her and she shot 21, her best ever.”
This is the first year that Demi has participated in the Elks Hoop Shoot. She competes in the 8-9 year-old division.
Congratulations Demi and good luck in Denver!
