People often ask us about the history of Sprout’s, so here’s the story about how we came to be. Sprout’s greenhouse was established in 1978 by Charles and Lynn Sprout. Charlie grew up in Lyons Valley outside of Lander, and Lynn Griffin grew up outside of Riverton. The seeds of love were sown when they were 13 and met while judging chickens. In 1968 Lynn and Charlie married. By 1974, they wanted to return to their country living roots, and escape the big city hustle and bustle of Lander. Charlie taught 6th grade at Northside Elementary in Lander while Lynn stayed at home and took care of her little Sproutlings, Frostie, Treva, and Griff. Their dream home was going to be a work-in-progress, and they found it at Snavely Lane, where the present day greenhouse is located.
To have enough money to raise 3 kids, Charlie and Lynn had to come up with other ways to make money. Charlie sprayed weeds for the county, and Lynn began a very large garden to sell produce. This quickly grew and by the late 70’s, they had a truck garden. They grew tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, and more.
During the summer of 1977, Charlie helped a man in Lander build a greenhouse, but the man had no money to pay him. When the work was completed, he gave Charlie the first greenhouse- made of glass with a coal stoker inside- as payment. That next year in 1978, Sprouts Greenhouse was officially open for business with its first structure. Given Lynn’s knack for starting seeds, the whole greenhouse was soon filled with plants. As May came, Charlie and Lynn doubted that they could sell all of those plants. Much to their amazement, they sold every single one. Sprouts Greenhouse was off and running!
Griff became business partners with Charlie and Lynn. Sprouts Greenhouse, LLC , was born in 2003. Each year great effort was made to improve the business. The Sprout’s were serious about providing the best plants, at the best price, and offering great service. Greenhouses were moved and rebuilt to create a better environment for customers and plants alike. Tremendous effort was taken to choose plants that would thrive in our tough climate.
In 2006 the untimely death of Lynn was experienced. This was a great loss, as she was instrumental in the success of Sprout’s. Charlie and Griff were left to take up the slack and continue. In January 2010, Griff bought the rest of Charlie’s shares in the business and Charlie went into retirement. Retirement for Charlie consists of getting up at 5 a.m. to check on greenhouses, drinking coffee, working at the greenhouse all day, and checking the greenhouses at night to make sure all the seedlings are okay. This is a lot less than he used to work, so for him it’s retirement. Charlie describes the partnership this way, “Griff runs the business, and I run the hoses!” Griff runs the day-to-day activities of the business and works hard to carry on the Sprouts Greenhouse tradition of excellence. Griff and his wife Joni are also very busy raising their son Justice and await the arrival of his younger sibling.
Sprout’s is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
