A 24-year-old Riverton man faces attempted murder charge in May stabbing
(Lander Wyo.) – The State of Wyoming has charged a 24-year-old Riverton man with second degree attempted murder and aggravated assault and battery in connection with an alleged stabbing from May 26.
The state alleges that Patrick Vincent Duran allegedly stabbed Stefan Bigmedicine three times in his side. The second degree attempted murder charge carries with it a penalty of no less than 20 years in prison. The aggravated assault charge has a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and/or $10,000 in fines. Circuit Court Judge Wesley A. Roberts bound Duran over to the Ninth District Court on June 6. An arraignment date where Duran will enter a plea has not yet been set.
Duran remains in the Fremont County Detention Center under a $200,000 cash bond.
The affidavit filed in the case was written by Fremont County Sheriff’s Detective Eric Granlund. He wrote that Lt. Bill Braddock was called on May 26 to #98 Firethorn in Riverton for a report that Bigmedicine had been stabbed.
Granlund details the events leading up to stabbing. Bigmedicine’s girlfriend Tracy Dewey allegedly told Braddock that Bigmedicine and Colin Amos picked her and her son up from the Riverton High School graduation. On the return trip, the car also picked up Duran, stopped at a liquor store and then went to the Firethorn address.
“While at the residence, Patrick Duran asked Bigmedicine if they could talk about Patrick Duran’s cousin,” states the affidavit. “Patrick Duran and Bigmedicine went outside to talk. Tracy Dewey stated to Lt. Braddock that she did not observe any conflict at that time.”
Granlund continues, saying that back inside Dewey and Bigmedicine were seated at a kitchen table and Amos was further away. “Patrick Duran was standing slightly behind Bigmedicine, between Bigmedicine and Amos,” states the affidavit. “Patrick Duran moved forward and struck Bigmedicine in the right side three times. Patrick Duran did not say anything prior to, during or after stabbing Bigmedicine.”
Dewey allegedly tried to get the knife from Duran, but he went outside with it still in his possession. “Dewey stated that she heard Amos ask Patrick Duran why he had stabbed Bigmedicine, but did not hear an answer,” states the affidavit.
Duran and Amos then reportedly left the scene on foot while Dewey took Bigmedicine to the hospital.
“A review of medical records indicates that Bigmedicine sustained three stab wounds resulting in damage to internal organs, including a liver laceration,” states the affidavit.
