As background, on August 8, 2012, three soldiers were killed by a suicide bomber in the Kunar province of Afghanistan.  One of those soldiers was Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin Griffin.

CSM Griffin grew up in Riverton and although his military career, which spanned 24 years, kept him away much of the time, he never lost his love for his community and his community never lost its love for him.  A state champion wrestler at Riverton High School (the Class of 1985), he was always a forceful presence – a man who believed in living life to the fullest.  He was a man who was passionately dedicated to his family and the Army.

In October of 2012 a small group consisting of three veterans and Riverton Police Chief Mike Broadhead started a campaign to erect a memorial statue to CSM Griffin.  The anticipated cost of this memorial is approximately $52,000.  The Board of Directors of the Riverton Police Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, unanimously agreed to act as the fiscal agent for this event, making all sponsorships and donations tax deductible.

After consulting with the Griffin family, the decision was made to erect the “Battle Cross” in Riverton’s Veterans Park.  The scheduled dedication date of the memorial will be Sept. 11th of this year. To date, this is the only fundraiser in Wyoming with proceeds to benefit the fabrication and installation of  the CSM Kevin Griffin Memorial Sculpture, honoring a fallen hero.
