Wolverine Culinary Teams capture Gold and Silver at State Competition; It’s a first for Wyoming

(Riverton, Wyo.) – For the first time in the history of the Wyoming Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) State Conference, one school has won the top two culinary awards.

Riverton High School’s FCCLA Team 1 was awarded Gold, and the RHS Team 2 received Silver at the competition March 26-28 in Cheyenne.

Team members appeared at this past week’s school board meeting to request permission to travel to the national competition in San Antonio, Texas, July 5-10.

“In addition to the gold and silver medal honors the students earned up to $7,000 in scholarship monies to the Culinary Institute of America and Johnson and Wales University,” said one student during the club’s presentation to the board. “We crafted three recipes before we left, but they chose what we had to cook. It was oven roasted chicken, zucchini and mashed potatoes,” she said.

Sponsor Pam Rivers said the RHS teams competed against 30 other schools in the culinary event.

Trustee Lynette Jeffres acknowledged the team’s efforts. “Well done, this is very exciting,” she said.

Jody Ray said the team members “really turned the program around here, and that’s exciting to me.”

Rivers noted that the team scores between the gold and silver awards differed by only one point. “It was that close,” she said. Rivers said the students will be doing fund raising events, including window washing down Main Street to help raise funds for the trip.

Superintendent Terry Snyder said RHS has many organizations and groups who have done so well, and he said he planned to make that an agenda item at a future meeting.

And the request for the two teams to travel to Texas was approved unanimously.

Team members include Andrea Rodriquez, Shania Stevens, Dylan Lancaster, Shayna Hodge, Rachel Wright, and Yanawut Khamthana.
