Utah man dies in second fatal wreck in Fremont County this week

(South Pass, Wyo.) – For the second day in a row, Wyoming Highway Patrol Troopers were called to a fatal wreck in Fremont County. WHP Lt. Tom Adams said Thad Cheatham, 47, of Tooele, Utah, died at the scene of a single vehicle wreck on Highway 28 at about 7 p.m. on Monday.

Adams said Cheatham was eastbound on Highway 28, just west of the Rest Stop and the Oregon Buttes Road, when he lost control of his 1997 Ford F250 on slush- and ice-covered roads. Adams said the truck crossed the center line and went off the left side of the road, rolling one and a half times and coming to rest on its roof. Cheatham was wearing a seatbelt, but damage to the cab caused fatal injuries. The 6′ 4″-tall man had to be extricated from the vehicle. The scene of the wreck was eight miles east of the Fremont/Sublette county line.

Adams said speeds too fast for conditions are being considered as a contributing factor to the wreck.

Cheatham was apparently headed to Greybull where he has family, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Mark Stratmoen. Stratmoen credited the Atlantic City and Lander Rural Fire Battalions for their assistance at the site. The outside temperature at the time was 27°F with windy conditions and occasional snow.

A Lander man died Sunday in a single-vehicle wreck on Highway 789. Read more about that wreck here.
