County Clerk reminds public of Political Action Committee rules
(Fremont County Wyo.) – Election season is upon us starting with candidate filing today. I just wanted to remind folks that there are some rules regarding the support or opposition of a candidate.
A Political action committee means any group of two (2) or more persons organized and associated for the purpose of raising, collecting or spending money for use in the aid of, or otherwise influencing or attempting to influence, directly or indirectly, the election or defeat of candidates for public office, candidate’s committees, or political parties, for support of or opposition to any initiative or referendum petition drive or for the adoption or defeat of any ballot proposition. (W.S. 22-1-102 (a) (xx).
A group CANNOT produce and send literature out to voters attempting to influence their potential vote for or against a candidate WITHOUT filing as a PAC defined above. Recently a committee sent letters to various people in the community and are not filed as a PAC with the Fremont County Clerk. All PACs are to file their paperwork with the County Clerk within 10 days of forming. If there are any questions, please contact Julie Freese at 307-332-1122.
