Wyoming Shakespeare is back for its 15th year with 3 new shows!

(Lander, Wyo.) – Lander based Wyoming Shakespeare Festival Company celebrates its fifteenth year of presenting Classical Theater to Fremont County audiences, and beyond, with MARY STUART by Friedrich Schiller, ANTON IN SHOW BUSINESS by Jane Martin and a Shakespeare Academy production of JULIUS CAESAR by William Shakespeare.

You can argue all you like, as historians and theologians have for centuries, about which of them has the greater claim to the English throne. But after seeing WSFC’s terrifically exciting new production of Friedrich Schiller’s MARY STUART directed by John O’Hagan which previews June 21st in Lander Library’s Carnegie Room, you won’t doubt that both the queens it portrays are born to rule.

Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I of England are powerful. And one doesn’t love them just because they’re lonely. These are dangerous times they live in, and they are undeniably dangerous women. They share only one scene, yet are always aware of each as the shadow of the other, looking over her shoulder. Mary isn’t wrong when she speaks of her and her cousin as fire and water. Their relationship is elemental. The classical combination of strengths, weakness and circumstance that define tragic heroes has seldom been parsed with such flash, vigor and lacerating insight. MARY STUART has a fierce timelessness in its depiction of political power games and the roles played — then as now — by charisma, duplicity, self-editing and what has come to be known as spin.

ANTON IN SHOW BUSINESS is a theater-world satire by Jane Martin, (believed by many to be the pseudonym of former Actors Theatre of Louisville head Jon Jory), that centers on an unlucky regional production of Chekhov’s Three Sisters.

Bored stagehands, tight funding, and prima donnas are challenges for most theaters, but especially so for smaller companies like Actors Express based in Lander, Wyoming. Like Mary Stuart, this production addresses politics. Although the stage is much smaller, its contemporary relevance defines our values. Perhaps encourages us to get some.
