Fremont County Students Win Prizes in Conservation Photography Contest

(Lander, Wyo.) – The Nature Conservancy of Wyoming has announced the winners of its 6th annual “I Believe in Conservation” high school photography contest. The winners include students from Lander Valley High School, Wyoming Indian High School, Cheyenne South High School, Natrona County High School, and Cody High School.

“This contest is a wonderful opportunity to get students outside and encourage them to see the natural world in new and artistic ways,” said Molly Hampton, the Conservancy in Wyoming’s director of philanthropy. “We’re hopeful they make the connection to conservation through this creative process.”

Prizes were awarded in three categories including Wild Places, People and Nature, and Wildlife. Community awards were also given in recognition of outstanding contributions from each participating school.

Irene Sankey of Wyoming Indian High School was a Community Award winner for her “People and Nature” entry titled “Mountain Skies.”

Abby Burns, of Lander Valley High School won 2nd Place in the Wild Places category. The image reveals rock formations in the Red Desert. “Being at places like this can transport to you into a different world,” said Burns. “It is breathtaking to get a view like this.” Burns also took home a Community Award in Wild Places category for a stunning photo showcasing open space at Red Desert.

First place winners received $250 each, 2nd place winners received $100, and 3rd place and Community award winners received $50 prizes. All Lander high schools are encouraged to join the next contest.

Finalist and winning images from the 2014 contest will be on display at exhibits around the state. The schedule will be shared once it is finalized. For information on exhibits as well as the 2015 contest, contact Sara Deur at 307-335-2137.
