Riverton Museum Wilderness Medicine talk is today; New exhibits now on display

(Riverton, Wyo.) – If you haven’t been to the Riverton Museum lately, you’re in for a surprise. The new Visitors Services Coordinator there, Dr. Jackson Crawford, has installed several new exhibits, rearranged the main floor exhibit area and has prepared a number of handouts featuring area attractions, information on museum collections and important dates in Riverton’s history. Crawford has also placed a small work desk at the entrance to the main exhibit hall to be available to answer questions or direct visitors to areas of their interest.

A little known feature of the museum is a sequence of historic wall maps, starting with one in an early Riverton school room exhibit and down a ramp that feature a unique view of post WWI Europe, the proposed “Center County” that was never split off from Fremont County, a pre-sale map of the Wind River Reservation Withdrawl area and a map of the Midvale Irrigation District with landowners names listed from the 1930s.

“People can get a sense of what is happening here by going to our Facebook page, which is new, and that features items from our collections, a Shoshone or Arapaho “Word of the Day” (Crawford, after all, is a linguist) and something new each day. People are responding to it,” he said. To “like” the Riverton museum’s Facebook page for daily updates, click here.

Crawford has also established a Riverton Museum Speakers Series, which will feature a talk on Wilderness Medicine Saturday (today) at 3 p.m. at the museum featuring Buck Tilton (see information below).

The museum is also celebrating Riverton’s 108th Birthday on Saturday August 16th from 11:30-3:00. The celebration will include live music, cowboy poetry & general poetry from Riverton’s own Dr. Kent Stockton and Wyoming’s 6th Poet Laureate, Shoshoni native Echo Klaproth. There will be cake and punch for those who attend and a showing of Riverton’s Centennial 1906-2006 film.
