(Fremont County, Wyo.) – It was one for the ages. The Riverton Wolverines scored a touchdown with 39 seconds left to gain a tie with Lander, and then a successful on-side kick resulted in a 49-yard field goal with only 13 seconds left as the Wolverines pulled one out over their cross-county rivals 30-27.
Lander led at halftime 13-7 on the strength of touchdowns from DeAndre Velarde and Joe Motherway. Riverton answered with an 80 yard bomb from Treyton Paxton to Jaren Draper.
In the third, Riverton gained a one point 14-13 lead after a Paxton to Colton Patterson TD pass, but Lander answered to take a 21-14 lead after Velarde scored from two yards out with 4:16 left in the quarter. Riverton came back and with 1:18 left in the quarter, closed the gap to one, 21-20 on a Nick Fenton score.
It seemed Lander had put the game away with a Motherway score from 23 yards out to give the Tigers a 27-20 lead with just over two minutes left, but the extra point snap was muffed, leaving the door open for the opportunistic Wolverines.
Riverton scored on a Paxton to Draper pass with 39 seconds left and Maurice Gartenschlaeger hit the PAT to tie the game at 27. On the next play, Gartenschlaeger kicked a line drive that bounced off of a Tiger player and Darrel Millor pounced on the loose ball to give Riverton a chance for the win. With 13 seconds remaining, Gartenschlaeger, an exchange student at RHS, drilled a 49 yard field goal for the winning margin.
It was Riverton’s fourth consecutive win over Lander.
